First Bloom Farm is fortunate to be part of the growing number of new farmers in Connecticut. In the field this year, we have had the wonderful addition of a serious deer fence and high pressure water connection. And believe me this is a BIG deal! More efficient farming makes happier farmers, who can spend more time on fine tuning their crops! We even <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_1" class="blsp-spelling-error">recieved</span> a little <a href="http://articles.courant.com/2011-06-15/community/hc-simsbury-incubator-farm-20110615_1_community-farm-incubator-farmer-program-tim-goodwin">press</a> about our <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_2" class="blsp-spelling-error">CFS</span> 'incubator' farming businesses in the Hartford <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_3" class="blsp-spelling-error">Courant</span>! Onward!<br /></div><br /><br /><br /><div>This year, First Bloom Farm will have over more land under cultivation, but won't make the 1 acre bench mark...there's always next year! The goal has been to produce more varieties, in more secession plantings. Secession plantings means planting the same crop at staggered intervals over the course of the summer season, ensuring fresh blooms until frost!</div><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><br /><div>Fresh from the field are my favorites from last year such as: purple Queen Anne's lace, <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_4" class="blsp-spelling-error">Salvia</span> 'Marble Arch', frosted explosion grass, broom corn, green zinnia, dark dahlias, basil, <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_5" class="blsp-spelling-error">celosia</span>, sunflowers. 'Highlander' millet and love-in-a-mist. New this year and beautiful are: rattlesnake grass, deep purple <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_6" class="blsp-spelling-error">scabiosa</span>, scabiosa pods, verbena <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_7" class="blsp-spelling-error">bonairiensis</span>, cherry-petaled black-eye Susan, <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_8" class="blsp-spelling-error">Rubysilk</span> grass, <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_9" class="blsp-spelling-error">corncockle</span>, and more! New herbs and veggies this year are: purple loose leaf kale, <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_10" class="blsp-spelling-error">tomatillo</span> stems with fruit (they look like green/purple Chinese lanterns!), tomato vines with green fruit, more basil, hyacinth bean for pods and flowers, and ornamental black peppers.</div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><br /><div>Stay tuned!</div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div></div></div></div>Maggiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08180738382885224443noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4097596120204052973.post-86377218212555612232011-07-12T19:41:00.010-04:002011-07-12T20:18:12.019-04:00Going Bridal!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho9Tmul4NlUqqUhzAyLqHGu0fTbFXZ7HnT3xgcfMtfigM91L2WLiJoGl1lX-GlZlg-pjVJsH7K0HdmSfBZGIb_evL-qwkJGRMvW1rQNzcfFGPnPgdYlwKedIu5VIihBnhm7In7Wr4Bieo/s1600/july+8+2011+052.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 266px; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628623923102415234" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho9Tmul4NlUqqUhzAyLqHGu0fTbFXZ7HnT3xgcfMtfigM91L2WLiJoGl1lX-GlZlg-pjVJsH7K0HdmSfBZGIb_evL-qwkJGRMvW1rQNzcfFGPnPgdYlwKedIu5VIihBnhm7In7Wr4Bieo/s400/july+8+2011+052.JPG" /></a> <img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 266px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628619552400369554" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjt1hRo0kBdNFC5L0cekbvPvQ3ZRr1UsaNKTIjr7Wf8rT-L_Kqds0pLDw1ec3Ka0DpCIm0pB4rXR_lRiR-wCwbtbjJTaVCq76Us1KV1cHAJIkTNRZ2ekNSOrB3wK7cCDkzi8dSCvxRhqqY/s400/july+8+2011+039.JPG" /> <img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 266px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628617179719583522" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ9kW7tQOqe0Mi1bwHYCshvdKCAkwr1xqPz_SyrSGtkiiwG4PBNd0uMBs12gZXYiO5ztnDJwQ2lwyoXBTbLmJAYTDrixm5tLmJF3Hbq0-2vi1VzFVAVQWhVza3fuXvi0ovOzr9fro1nJ0/s400/july+8+2011+055.JPG" /><br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 266px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628617175271165522" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9f9aV1x_bNQkGgID6TQPsxpRXNEfxfXdRhGGUDDyed4iUm9cpZv2_kWGCZMMYbeFS6KIvRLZduHQ63fvz5UCQCQO9tHxxxr4U3eFZ0dBCpOes1XOqKakk_PxkJhrX83MD4QiITSODLlA/s400/july+8+2011+015.JPG" /><br /><br /><div><br /><br /><div><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 266px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628617171118141058" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFjCtv-AWpHd0wP9MoFGSCyi3-FOFPWIiVxJE1ppmilPiP5DvMBpE97eIJ2lw09YssOBuvU0Az-F9mwe5FoRI3Z_E_kWVEeVO4C-HSC8o1XH_FsR074zErhaTVYgpm6fV7wOBQ6LzgbiU/s400/july+8+2011+011.JPG" />One phone call from <span style="color:#006600;"><a href="http://www.greenbrideguide.com/">Green Bride Guide</a></span> and a quick trip to the field, last Friday the July field flowers were on their way to the NBC studio for their 30 seconds of fame. Happy to see the frost and fall, I've always enjoyed the beauty and transition that is fall. I once heard is said that people are attracted to spaces and places where there is a transition in landscape, and new <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">perspective</span> on viewing change from old to new, now to next. Well, here we are now, October, surrounded by the glory of fall foliage.<br /><br />The fields are transitioning too, out of the summer site in <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_1" class="blsp-spelling-error">Simsbury</span>, my focus now shifts back to the woody crops in <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_2" class="blsp-spelling-error">Northfield</span>. Posted are willow pics from the field this time of year. In a few weeks after leaf drop, the stem and bud color on some <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_3" class="blsp-spelling-error">cultivars</span> will intensify, revealing the cold weather beauty of next.</div></div>Maggiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08180738382885224443noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4097596120204052973.post-58381017682114643862010-10-21T16:02:00.003-04:002010-10-21T16:09:15.749-04:00Diggin' Dahlias!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhJrLzSS3lwGlLeIF96rBoQLL6hFYQgU2PWe7wZscw3xzigoFdscdEA1nquqj7OLw1vfiDNXpyxIFJqLEEAIgjaQKr_WqNZH8tKwE7RGk2b1cO-oModubbzRexj7LgOY64avJNdENW6wo/s1600/diggin+dahlia+october+10.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 266px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5530593314691807314" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhJrLzSS3lwGlLeIF96rBoQLL6hFYQgU2PWe7wZscw3xzigoFdscdEA1nquqj7OLw1vfiDNXpyxIFJqLEEAIgjaQKr_WqNZH8tKwE7RGk2b1cO-oModubbzRexj7LgOY64avJNdENW6wo/s400/diggin+dahlia+october+10.JPG" /></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGq5gpl-Ud6_5k9ItOJ3qXjMfyxghiUpOBWBjA8FHYJeTOxWCjvnAwYeoSL7vtEJsFtEEfpFH0HGckj1T_WmrK-mrGOkoh2k0Fbv7VwXUWPI4x9gJlpy9aHkP_cQwgsU1g3dykQUKiwXM/s1600/sept+19+10+075.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 266px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5530593307761153202" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGq5gpl-Ud6_5k9ItOJ3qXjMfyxghiUpOBWBjA8FHYJeTOxWCjvnAwYeoSL7vtEJsFtEEfpFH0HGckj1T_WmrK-mrGOkoh2k0Fbv7VwXUWPI4x9gJlpy9aHkP_cQwgsU1g3dykQUKiwXM/s400/sept+19+10+075.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><div>The 'summer' season is officially over in the <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-error">CFS</span> field! Make arrangements! Typically, my market prep is as follows: count, bunch and store. Last Friday afternoon I decided on a change of pace....I slowed down enough to enjoy the field, flowers and "played" a bit. The arrangements' finishing touches were the addition of pheasant feathers- hunted by a local Northfield friend! </div>Maggiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08180738382885224443noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4097596120204052973.post-90070300758720208342010-09-09T21:42:00.010-04:002010-09-09T22:39:59.672-04:00I'm in Love! with (False) Queen Anne's Lace 'Black Knight'<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 489px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 322px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5515099737033418514" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaKxYTjbKsu5ygEMMh6XKx-OKahoczRfS6qfBvHewx76D0GLrlJ9QKutp1xZU4qCc7ALL3Qk4xf-YTK9pzG5kuWXcDLmzimib-64wdF1Sd5QnFj7BIotK_tg6KktED69WtwTQMsCHYSdI/s400/9+9+10+cfs+019.JPG" /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 352px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 249px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5515099743836810082" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg44ctldrLVybPE_9Y_8EV9Df0ImWbxMJ5XuUU-xF_B20JVzUoG6bMjCX3KRD8-6D2oJeEQQv5PdjAItUAoWksaKs-WXCwsNONuAEFqLLZluandNPssjAavNDB5gzkQKozUyLRmYsCYBLQ/s400/9+9+10+cfs+021.JPG" /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2tpPHS2Q15FKQHcD2CPon-2CcRJ1QZSruJ9xTOiVHyQLlUlyGDWRDLBfuwRX3IKs2daciioSvWZQ68iImtB5cbGP40yv8jIIF-QqEvJZ95hVf-2O_OUKf1CfYo6F2JEtlKrC5QDXAAu8/s1600/9+9+10+cfs+015.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 266px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5515099768394989410" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2tpPHS2Q15FKQHcD2CPon-2CcRJ1QZSruJ9xTOiVHyQLlUlyGDWRDLBfuwRX3IKs2daciioSvWZQ68iImtB5cbGP40yv8jIIF-QqEvJZ95hVf-2O_OUKf1CfYo6F2JEtlKrC5QDXAAu8/s400/9+9+10+cfs+015.JPG" /></a><br /><div><br /><br /><div><br /><br /><br /><div>It's official: I'm in love, head-over-heels, & have completely fallen for one of my 'trial' cut flowers: (False) Queen Anne's lace 'Black Knight'. To paraphrase Anne, the <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_2" class="blsp-spelling-error">CFS</span> farmer, "when it went up, I thought it was like a rainbow".... I couldn't agree more, Anne. What does this mean for us farmers? Season Extension! High tunnels are essentially tall unheated greenhouses that allow warmer temperatures in early spring and late fall- perfect for growing at the extremes of our New England seasons. In the high tunnel, farmers have the benefit of planting directly into the ground in an environment higher than outdoor temperatures!<br /><br />Flower growers use high tunnels for crops such as larkspur, sweet William, <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_3" class="blsp-spelling-error">lisianthus</span> and spring flowering bulbs. Sarah spent a morning picking flowers at the farm in Simsbury, and arranged the flowers later that day. I brought my bunched cut flowers and met Sarah at Market...The result: a beautiful summer display! To see more of Sarah's work visit her at <a href="http://www.sarahwordennaturaldesign.com/">http://www.sarahwordennaturaldesign.com/</a> </div></div></div></div>Maggiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08180738382885224443noreply@blogger.com0
